The necessary criteria for a site to be declared a heritage
For a place or site to be declared as a world heritage, it needs to fulfil certain 10 criteria prescribed by the UNESCO team in terms of cultural tradition or civilization, outstanding structure, cultural representative, traditions, natural beauty, ecological development or natural habitat among others.

Gujarat has been recognized to have a World Heritage site in the name of Champaner at Pavagadh near Vadodara. The Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park is situated in the Panchmahal district in Gujarat and was recognized in the year 2004.
Champaner’s recognition as a heritage site
This place is recognized as a heritage site due to its historic cultural properties that includes prehistoric places, with remains that date back to the 16th century era. It also contains palaces, religious structures, agriculture structure and water installations that date back from 8th century to the 14th century.
This historical place also consists of step-wells, temples, mosques and tombs and is spread over 1,329 hectares. Some of the places are Kalika Mata Temple dedicated to the Mother Goddess, Lakulish Temple dedicated to one of the incarnation of Lord Shiva, Jain temple dedicated to Jain saints, Mosques named as Jami Masjid, Nagina Masjid and Kevada Masjid with their ancient architecture.
List of probable heritage sites that may be declared by the UNESC
There are about 30 Heritage sites in India, recognized by the UNESCO. However India has submitted some more mentions of sites to UNESCO for acceptance as a heritage location. In this list, India has included 4 of Gujarat’s locations or sites.
The proposed sites by India to UNESCO from Gujarat are:
- Dholavira-Kutch ( Related to Indus Valley Civilization)
- Rani ki Vaav –Patan ( A famous archaeological Step well)
- Wild Ass Sanctuary-Kutch ( Related to endangered wild ass sub-species of Indian Wild Ass in Little Rann of Kutch) and
- Ahmedabad-Financial capital of Gujarat and one of the ancient cities of Gujarat as well.
In addition to this, the site of the GIR wildlife sanctuary has also been nominated for world heritage sites in Gujarat.
